National and University Library NUK II

Reading to know as a transparent activity, to suck from city and keeps it lively at the same time.

The library is seen as a body, divided into three sections:
1- Two interlocking levels, ground floor access and archaeological floor.
2- One book storage, with multiple connected spaces.
3- Reading rooms, which are clearly differenced in two designs according their situation. One group is formed by common and open areas located between the outer skin and the storages. The other one consists in an outer skin constructed with small boxes of various sizes that overlook the city.

Instead of that
Plečnik conception about the library as an interior space, we propose a library turned over to the city, promoting the access into the new spaces and encouraging the  participation in its activities. There is a two-way relationship with the city: From the street level, citizens will get the view of the activities happening in the different working areas; Placed inside the library, you can enjoy watching the city and its life.

The new spaces create the possibility to interact in different ways and have multiple scale spaces according to different conditions: from isolation and absolute silence until the more dynamic collective activity.

C
lusters of groups containing the smallest rooms are displayed as the  most scope communication and work  pieces , due to their capacity to be taken up in multiple ways; different sizes, different environments and materials, different textures and colors, as one wishes and thinks about a room in order to provide the most positive and enriching atmosphere. The endless number of boxes that make up the library face are suited to the different research groups, students or  citizens. The library thought as the sum of activities, the combination of different people. The library as the sum of all the ideas, in a collaborative space.
Access is offered in two levels that offer several connections , becoming an access space , able to change into multiple forms regarding a great variety of activities .

Archaeological traces and remains, which are respected but promoted, as the continuity to the cardo and the decumanus is managed by two units of stairs at the ends as big mouths of light, having the possibility of  be joined to the multi-use space.
The access level, crossed by a diagonal path that connects two ramps, allows comfortably go across the building and take out activity to the street. The level of access is the street level and it is completely open and public. Only the structure and elevators are fix occupants. the rest of the spaces are mobile,  being open or closed , in a movement that get to  disappear and change according seasons, day temperature and activities having place.

The diagonal walk across the ground floor at the street level is articulated from two public spaces: a new square in to north (Rimska Cesta and Vegova Ulica) as an expanse of the small nearby park and the start of the new sharing use road. This small square resulting provides a new urban space that let the new library to show a geometrically clear corner to the city and enjoy a reception outside space where an independent cafe is available. At the other end of the diagonal (Zoisova Cesta) as there is a crossroads without public dimension, the new building offers the ground floor, in the access ramp, as urban open space, moving back the outdoors locking position.
